Peace on earth, good will to men

thebells

“I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men.”

This Christmas, the world seems like a much darker place. There is so much hate, sin, evil, selfishness, and greed in the world. Our world is filled with the murder of innocent children, the murder of teachers and firefighters, adultery, divorce, broken relationships, cancer, death of family members, war, famine, extreme natural disasters, parents who abandon their children, children who forsake their parents, those who give up on the ones they love, and people loving money more than their own loved ones. It is certainly not a silent night.

“And in despair I bowed my head
‘There is no peace on earth,’ I said,
‘For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.’”

Where is God? “Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence.” (1 Kings 19:11-12). He is in that silence. He is in the still small voice. He is voice of the baby crying in the manger. He is in the love. He is in our gleam of hope, our tears of brokenness and loneliness, in our praise, our inspiration, our friends and our family.

“Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
‘God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men.’”

God is NOT DEAD! And He absolutely is not asleep either! Oh, God, let the wrong fail and the right prevail…”let us see redemption win, let us know the struggle ends, that You can mend a heart that’s frail and torn”!

“Till ringing, singing on its way
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good will to men.”

Love someone this Christmas. Love even when rejected. Let us all continue to love those who do not seem to deserve it. Let us continue to love even when it’s overtures are returned unwanted.

Merry Christmas, peace on earth, good will to men.
